The Advanced Placement English course in Literature and Composition is designed to provide students with the intellectual challenges and workload consistent with a typical undergraduate university English Literature course. “Through the close reading of selected texts, participants deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read, students consider a work’s structure, style, and themes as well as such smaller elements as the use of figurative language, symbolism and tone” (Acorn 40). The works selected in this course require thorough, deliberate reading that yields multiple meanings. Students are challenged to write interpretations of that
reading based on careful observation of textual details. Writing and rewriting extended analyses and timed, in-class responses, as well as writing to understand, writing to explain, and writing to evaluate, are the practices at the heart of this course.
